We are a group of four (2 couples) travelling from San Francisco to Hong Kong via Singapore Airlines on the Boeing 777-ER300. What's the best seating plan for economy?

Also, do you know if I can use United Mileage Plus miles to upgrade?

I believe Singapore Airlines will only assign seats if you have frequent flier status on Star Alliance, perhaps even restricted to Star Alliance Gold members only. If only one passenger has Star Gold status, Singapore Airlines might not allow everyone to get seat assignments in advance, and only limit it to two passengers.

There are many many different possibilities for your particular situation, I will try to list some below:

Three seats together, plus one more across the aisle on an aisle seat

Two seats together, on two consecutive rows

Two seats together, on the same row across the aisle

Take a chance and skip the middle seat, such as 35D, 35G, and 36D, 36 G. You will hope to have a pretty empty flight, where the middle seat is not assigned, in which case you will be very comfortable with the vacant middle seat. If the seat is assigned, you should be able to easily swap with whomever is seated there for one of your aisle seats.

Similar to above but the left or right side of the plane, 35A, 35C, and 36A, 36C. Again hope for an empty B seat.

One couple in exit row, and another one row behind them.

I would probably go with #4, and keep my fingers crossed.

As for upgrades, here is the information:http://www.staralliance.com/en/travellers/benefits/star_alliance_upgrade_awards.html Unfortunately, it appears that MileagePlus points cannot be be used to upgrade Singapore Airlines flights.
