What are the best seats for a group of 4 travellers - it is our first long haul trip. We'd like to be seated together or adjacently in groups of 2.

Since you did not specifically mention which airline, route, or class of service you are traveling on, I will assume that it is on board Emirates A380 in Economy Class.

In general, we always prefer to sit toward the front of the plane as much as possible, since the front of the plane usually gets served during meals first, gets off the plane (and therefore immigrations) sooner, and suffers less during turbulence.

Emirates economy class cabin is configured in a 3-4-3 configuration, so the center section of four seats might be a good choice. Beware that some of the bulkhead rows are bassinet positions, and passengers seated there might be relocated at the last minute in order to accommodate passengers traveling with infants. The only pairs of seats are the exit rows at rows 67 and 80, and there are no adjacent pairs of seats. We would probably choose 45 DEFG for a party of four traveling together.

What to expect flying Newcastle to Dubai in A330-200. Dubai - via - Melbourne - Auckland NZ.
Can we expect flat beds on any part of our journey we are flying business class all the way.

The best way to find the answer is perhaps on Emirates web site: http://www.emirates.com/ca/English/flying/service_finder/service_finder.aspx

Currently, only some of Emirates’ B777-300ER, and their B777-300 (new) and B777-200LR have the full-flat seats in business class.
