Is there a website that compares airlines by seat width? I need a wider seat.
This is a feature we have considered adding to our site, and there’s a good chance it will be added sometime in early 2009.
Most airline seats are within a very narrow range for similar class of service, so the variations are small, probably about one inch in width separates the tightest seat to the widest seat in the same coach class cabin. The Airbus A380 probably has the widest coach seat at about 18-19 inches, close to two inches wider than most other airline seats. However, only three airlines so far have the A380. Business class seats have wider variations, especially since many business class seats have moveable arm-rests that can be lowered, particularly when the seat is reclined into a bed. The total space for each Business class seat is usually about 3-5 times that for one coach seat. International First class seats are the widest and most spacious, and often takes up as much as 6-8 times the space of one coach seat.
There is no airline that has a monopoly on the widest seat for every route they serve, so it is best to consider your most frequent traveled routes, and check the airlines serving them. Also beware that airlines have been reducing their capacity, and sometimes substitute smaller planes, or even regional jets for some routes.
Best of luck in finding a comfortable seat.
