We are traveling on American Airlines flight #1882, which is a Boeing 757. Their site has seat 13F highlighted as a “preferred seat” available only to AAdvantage Gold or Platinum members. Yet your site says that seat has no window and lists that seat as not good or “beware”…. Why would they be saying it is preferred?

Many airlines designate the first few rows of coach cabin as “preferred seats”, for the following reasons:

  1. Meal service ahead of most of the cabin
  2. Better view out the window, as the seats in the first few rows are generally in front of the wing
  3. More likely to have seats with power ports for those business travelers that need to work on board
  4. Get off the plane a few minutes before those further back, could be the difference between making your connection or missing it
  5. Amongst other frequent travelers, who are most likely to know the “drill” and proper etiquette of flying in a commercial airliner

Notably, these seats do NOT have:

  1. Any more legroom, with the exception of United Airlines in their Economy Plus section, which has about 3-4 inches more room
  2. Any different service than the rest of the coach cabin
  3. Any difference in the seats themselves
Rows 13 and 14 both have missing windows, where the cabin wall is flat, and do not have the normal window cavity that gives the window seat an extra 3-4 inches of elbow and shoulder room. You can see this a little more clearly by looking at the right side of this Airliners.net Photo.
