AirTran flies only two models, Boeing 717-200, and Boeing 737-700. This Boeing 717 is a modernized version of the venerable McDonnell Douglas DC-9/MD-80 family, which evolved into the 717 when Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas. The engines are mounted by the fuselage by the tail, making the rear of the plane relatively noisy.
No meals are served on any AirTran flights in any class, although bevearges and light snacks are available. There is free XM Satellite radio at every seat. With over 100 channels of digital commercial free music, news, sports, talk and entertainment, there is something for everyone. Large overhead bins for rollaboards give plenty of storage space.
Most people prefer the two-seat left side of the plane, since there is no middle seat. However, on relatively empty flights, those seated on the DEF side have a good chance of having an empty middle seat.
Note that AirTran has a paid-upgrade policy, where on the day of travel, passengers can upgrade for $40-$80 into Business class based on availability, and depending on the length of the flight.
